The Story Behind PULSE R2

In 2021, DFS introduced its first in-house developed high-performance hub: the PULSE R2.

Designed specifically for carbon fiber performance wheelsets, the PULSE R2 represents our vision of what a modern racing hub should be.

For years, DFS has been committed to advancing cycling technology through the development of lightweight, durable, and high-performance carbon wheelsets. Throughout this journey, we came to realize a simple truth:

A great wheelset is not defined by the rim alone.

At the heart of every wheelset lies the hub—the component responsible for rolling efficiency, power transfer, stiffness, durability, and overall ride quality.

Yet the market presented a challenge.

Premium hubs continued to become more expensive, while many budget alternatives struggled to deliver the performance and reliability serious riders demanded.

Cyclists were constantly forced to choose between weight and stiffness, engagement speed and efficiency, performance and durability.

We believed they shouldn't have to.

That belief became the foundation of the PULSE R2 project.

Our goal was never to create the lightest hub on the market.

Our goal was to create the most balanced high-performance hub possible.

After years of development, countless design iterations, laboratory testing, and real-world riding, the PULSE R2 was born.

Smooth Rolling Performance

Rolling resistance is one of the most important factors affecting wheel efficiency.

It determines how effortlessly a bike accelerates, maintains speed, and carries momentum.

The PULSE R2 is equipped with premium EZO sealed bearings or optional TPI ceramic bearings, combined with carefully selected low-viscosity lubricant to minimize friction while maintaining excellent protection and durability.

The result is a wheelset that feels smoother, faster, and more responsive.

Faster Engagement

Power transfer begins the moment you apply force to the pedals.

The faster the engagement, the more direct and responsive the ride feels.

The PULSE R2 features the DFS patented SSF ratchet system—Smoother, Simpler, Faster.

Available in both 45T and 72T configurations, the system delivers an engagement angle of just 8° or 5°, ensuring near-instant power transfer during sprints, climbs, and technical riding situations.

Beyond faster engagement, the SSF system is engineered to reduce drag, improve efficiency, simplify maintenance, and enhance long-term reliability.

Superior Stiffness

A wheelset can only perform as well as its foundation.

Hub stiffness directly influences power transfer efficiency and overall wheel stability.

To maximize stiffness, the PULSE R2 utilizes a 2:1 lacing platform combined with oversized 74mm flanges.

The larger flange diameter improves spoke bracing angles and increases both lateral and torsional stiffness.

Additionally, the main bearing position has been moved further outward to provide greater support and wheel stability under load.

Whether sprinting out of the saddle or pushing hard through corners, the PULSE R2 delivers a solid and direct riding feel with minimal energy loss.

The PULSE R2 is designed for riders who demand long-term durability and low maintenance.

An adjustable bearing preload system allows optimal bearing setup, improving smoothness while extending bearing life.

The freehub body is constructed from premium TC4 titanium alloy, offering exceptional resistance to cassette bite, corrosion, and long-term wear.

Its simplified architecture enables tool-free disassembly and maintenance, reducing complexity while minimizing potential failure points.

Because confidence matters, every PULSE R2 hub is backed by a lifetime warranty on all hub components excluding bearings.

At approximately 285 grams per set, the PULSE R2 achieves impressive weight savings while maintaining the structural integrity required for serious performance riding.
