Step 1 – Remove the rear wheel
Loosen the thru-axle and remove the rear wheel from the bicycle frame.
Step 2 – Loosen the preload locking screw
Locate the small locking screw on the hub’s bearing preload adjustment ring.
Loosen this screw sufficiently to allow the preload adjustment ring to rotate.
Step 3 – Release the existing bearing preload
Turn the preload adjustment ring outwards to reduce the existing bearing preload.
Normally, this involves turning the ring anticlockwise. However, some hub designs use the opposite direction.
Important: Confirm the correct adjustment direction for the THR R2 hub before proceeding.
Step 4 – Reinstall the rear wheel
Place the rear wheel back into the bicycle frame.
Install the thru-axle and tighten it to the bicycle manufacturer’s recommended torque.
The wheel must be correctly secured before adjusting the bearing preload.
Step 5 – Adjust the bearing preload
Slowly turn the preload adjustment ring towards the bearing assembly until you feel slight resistance.
The adjustment ring should make light contact with the bearing assembly, removing any excessive axial movement.
Do not overtighten the adjustment ring.
Step 6 – Check for bearing play
Hold the wheel rim firmly and gently rock the wheel from side to side.
Check for any noticeable lateral movement or knocking.
If movement is present, make small adjustments to the preload ring until the play is eliminated.
Step 7 – Check bearing smoothness
Rotate the rear wheel slowly and check that it spins freely and smoothly.
The wheel should rotate without excessive resistance, grinding or roughness.
If the bearings feel excessively tight, slightly reduce the preload and check again.
Step 8 – Secure the preload adjustment ring
Once the correct adjustment has been achieved, tighten the small locking screw on the preload adjustment ring.
Use the manufacturer’s specified tightening torque.
After securing the screw, check the wheel again for bearing play and smooth rotation.
Important information
Correct bearing preload adjustment should eliminate unwanted bearing play without introducing excessive bearing pressure.
Excessive preload can cause:
* Increased bearing friction
* Reduced wheel rotation efficiency
* Premature bearing wear
* Reduced bearing service life
Manufacturer verification required: DFS should confirm the adjustment direction, locking-screw torque and precise preload procedure for the THR R2 hub before distributing these instructions as an official technical guide.
